Impressions vs. Reach: What Should be Your Focus?

When you're running social media channels, it is really important that people discover your efforts else all that work will go in vain. Whether you are a social media influencer or a brand, awareness about your social media channels is very important. A separate budget for digital awareness is the most ideal option as it will help you gain the recognition you need.

But, it is also important that you know some social media jargon (technical terms) to help you overlook your team and improve their performance. This article is all about reach vs. impressions. What are they and why are they important for your social media awareness? These are some of the very important metrics that will help you in creating a strategy for your social media platforms. Let's learn about them and how will they help you recognize your social media game.

Knowing More About Reach vs. Impressions

Both of these terms usually sound the same so people mostly don't pay too much attention to them. But they have a really big difference which only a few understand.

Impressions define the number of times your content was shown to people, whether they reacted to it or not.

Reach defines the number of times your content was shown to unique visitors, people other than your followers.

Your impressions will always be greater than your reach because if a single person views that content multiple times, it will be counted as a new impression every time. This isn't the same for reach. Your unique visitor should also engage with the content, for example, click the link, comment on it, or like it for it to count as a reach.

What is the Difference Between Them?

Let's say you have 500 followers on Facebook. In a perfect world, when you post 1 post, you will have 500 impressions and if every one of your followers interacts with it, then you'll have a reach of 500 as well.

If you post 2 posts, you'll have 1000 impressions but the reach will still be 500. Because your 500 followers saw 2 posts which doubles the reach. But the number of followers remains the same so the number of reach doesn't change.

This was an example of a perfect world because you won't get the exact number of impressions as the number of followers. Digital platform's algorithms change very frequently, so you may never know what the recent changes might do to your metrics. So, don't worry about it, just keep creating relevant content so that your page remains active and the social media channel doesn't throw it at the back of your audience's feed.

Facebook Impressions

Facebook's criteria for impressions is different. If your ad appears on your audience's screen and they scroll back to see it again, this counts as one impression. In the span of 24 hours, if an ad is visible to the same user twice, this counts as two impressions.

For other platforms this is different. If an ad appears on your screen , it counts as a single impression. But Facebook is a bit strict with its rules. Unless the person goes back to the ad again, Facebook won't count it as an impression. The same goes for image and video ads.

Twitter Impressions

Twitter is very lenient with its analytics and it gives you them for free! If you're logged into your account and someone views your tweet, that counts as a single impression. Threads have their own impressions. If your tweet has 300 impressions and a reply to it earns 600 impressions, then the total impressions for that thread will be 900.

All of these metrics are available on Twitter. Remember, reach isn't a thing on Twitter, so impressions are all you have. When you go to the tab site, click "Tweets." You will see a bar graph of all your impressions in detail.

Instagram Impressions

Reach and impressions are two different things on Instagram. Impressions are added when a person sees a post, IGTV video, or story. When someone likes, shares, comments, or saves your post, that is included in reach.

"Unique" means a person who doesn't follow you but has a feed of content that is similar to yours. When you see a reel on Instagram that isn't from your follower and you like or comment on it, then Instagram will show you similar ones. For that page, you are a "unique reach or impression."

What Should You Focus On?

It all depends on your business goals. If you are in the initial stages of your business and want to gain your audience's attention and create brand awareness, then ads are the best way for you to go. A successful ad has more impressions, so as a newborn business, you should worry about impressions. Because the merit of ads and sponsored content is based on impressions.

If gaining customers and increasing engagement is your goal, then reach is important for you. Because the more people interact with your content, the more it is shown on other people's feeds. The number of leads is also determined by how much reach you have.

You should keep track of engagement because it will determine your ROI. When you are not sure about your return on investments, then you should keep a check on the analytics and metrics. It will also help you to determine the next step for your business.

Ending Statement

As you've reached the end of this article, we hope that you have understood the difference between these metrics. Both of them are really important for a business as well as a social media influencer to keep track of. You should remember that metrics and analytics are not only there to get your followers or customers. They help you after you've gained all of them. They will help you in creating future strategies and how you should expand your business or channel. So, always keep a check on them because if they stumble, your reach and impressions might get messed up as well.
